Position après 8…d5 introduisant le gambit Marshall.
Il existe un certain nombre d’ouvertures qui portent le nom de Marshall. De façon assez étonnante pour un joueur qui est mort il y a plus de 60 ans, deux variantes de gambit ont encore une importance théorique. La première est le gambit Marshall dans la partie espagnole : 1.e4 e5 2.Cf3 Cc6 3.Fb5 a6 4.Fa4 Cf6 5.O-O Fe7 6.Te1 b5 7.Fb3 O-O 8.c3 d5. La première partie connue avec ce gambit est celle contre Capablanca en 1918, bien que Marshall l’avait déjà joué dans d’autres parties qui n’éveillèrent pas l’attention. Bien que Capablanca finisse par gagner cette partie, que l’on considère comme une illustration de son génie défensif, le gambit Marshall devient très populaire6. Les Noirs obtiennent de bonnes chances d’attaque et leur score est d’environ 50 %, un excellent résultat pour les Noirs. Le gambit Marshall est redouté, de sorte que de nombreux joueurs de haut niveau, comme Garry Kasparov, choisissent des variantes anti-Marshall comme 8.a4. Le gambit Marshall a encore été employé lors du championnat du monde d’échecs classique 2004 entre Vladimir Kramnik et Péter Lékó.
